The
Badger Organic Soap Bar
Interesting Facts, Tidbits & A Brief Story of Natural Soap
When you look back in time, you will find that various cultures have
employed a wide variety of cleansing methods and rituals. No soap in the
Roman baths ... just hot water followed by precious oils.
Hunter-gatherer cultures tended to use sweat lodges, skin-scraping with
a specially shaped stick (Romans used these, too), and taking a
refreshing dip in cold stream water. Early European cultures, circa
1400, felt that baths were dangerous and left one open to contracting
disease, while their oriental contemporaries held cleanliness in high
regard. We hold cleanliness in high regard!
Why Make Organic Soap?
We think it is not only safer and healthier for your skin, but it
makes for an incredibly luxurious, soothing, and pleasurable bathing
experience. The skin is your body's largest organ of elimination! So
healthy skin is a keystone for both health and beauty. (Skin also does a
great job of nicely wrapping the contents.) Skin comes in a variety of
alluring colors. It can be very smooth, sensitive, sensually fragrant,
and, in the eye of the beholder, very beautiful. Many people spend the
big bucks for various lotions, potions, and skin elixirs ... all to keep
that wonderful skin flexible, smooth, and healthy. For frequent washers,
the need for a healthy soap is obvious. And if you think that soap is
good, natural soap is better. And if you want the best, you want a soap
formulated using organically grown ingredients. Healthy ingredients
equals healthy skin.
Soap Science
Soap making is the science and art of combining an alkaline
substance with an oil (in this case, sodium hydroxide with pure
vegetable oils) to create "soap." Use too much of the alkaline
substance, and you get a harsh, irritating soap. Use too much oil, and
you get soap that leaves your skin feeling oily. This is why everybody
shops around for the "right soap." When you blend rich,
healthy ingredients to perfection, you get luxurious, moisturizing,
creamy, dreamy lather, fabulous fragrance, and a soap that's
exceptionally good for your skin. You end up feeling "healthy
clean."
Making Process
Our cold-processed soaps are mixed at low temperature, in small
batches, and poured into block-size molds. They retain copious amounts
of natural glycerin; the essential oils provide true fragrance and
miraculous therapeutic powers. And the Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil,
Beeswax, and Wild African Shea Butter help to soothe and condition. Once
the soap has set, the blocks are hand-cut to size and "aged"
on wooden racks for 4 to 6 weeks, until they become mild, hard-surfaced,
long-lasting little blocks of perfection. I know I'm pushing it a bit,
but I'm a true soap seeker, and I've found my bar.
Organic Ingredients
Our soap uses significant amounts of organic, natural, and wild
crafted botanical ingredients. No animal fats. No GMOs. No fillers. No
chemical surfactants, synthetics, or other creepy stuff that you
definitely don't want on your skin. Organic means (to me) grown in
healthy soil without the use of chemical fertilizers or chemical
pesticides. It implies the use of ecological farming methods, including
the creation of healthy soil with natural compost, and the use of
traditional practices like crop rotation and cover crops. In some cases,
it takes advantage of planting according to moon cycles and the use of
subtle soil amendments like biodynamic soil inoculants.
"Green Soap"
The use of an organic soap helps protect the environment, support
fair trade, and helps create vital economic opportunity where it's most
needed.
